9 Ways to Protect Your Storage Unit
As college students, we are very familiar with having a lot of stuff. Our things can take up a lot of room, so getting a storage unit can be very tempting and beneficial.
However when it comes to getting a storage unit you want to be sure you are keeping your stuff and your space in the best condition. Protecting your stuff and unit does not have to be difficult and can save you expenses at the end of the day.
1. Choose the right storage unit
Make sure you tour the facility and check out the condition before signing any contract or committing to a storage unit. You want to ask about things like access codes, surveillance cameras, and patrols. It’s best to choose a facility close by so you can frequently check up on your items.
2. Choose a sturdy lock
If your storage unit allows you to choose a lock, choose either a disc lock or a cylinder lock. Both of these locks are difficult to cut with bolt cutters. You want to avoid choosing the lock with the long shackle since these make it easier to break in.
3. Place valuable items in the back
If you have anything valuable, that cannot be replaced, you should place that item in the back to reduce the chance of it getting taken in a burglary. If people do break in, odds are they are going to grab the first thing they see rather than grab the item all the way in the back.
4. Do not store directly on the ground
To avoid any damage, you can put flattened cardboard boxes underneath furniture. You should not put furniture directly on the ground since it is more susceptible to damage. This is a great way to ensure the quality of your items.
5. Disassemble items when possible
You want to make the most of your space, so if you can disassemble large items, that will benefit you in the long run. Some of these items can include beds, tables, and more. The more items you can fit in your space, the better.
6. Wrap items
Try to wrap items when you can to avoid them receiving any damage or collecting any dust. This will also keep any insects from crawling on your valuable items. This is perhaps the best tip to preserve the quality of your items
7. Forget anything edible
Odds are you probably are not going to want to eat anything that has been sitting in a storage unit for months, so do not pack anything edible. Packing edible items in your storage unit provides more cons than pros. With edible items, you have to worry about infestations of bugs, mice, etc. Save yourself the headache and the trouble and leave the edible items at home.
8. Do not store flammable items
Never store any items that can cause a fire, such as chemicals and toxins. Things like fertilizer, fireworks, paint, and propane should not be placed in a storage facility due to its combustible properties.
9. Keep in mind the climate
If your storage unit is located in a place with frequent shifts in climate, it is important to keep that in mind when leaving items there. There are certain items that cannot weather extreme shifts in climate. Things such as electronics and photos will experience damage if left in a place with extreme heat and cold.
