Jan was great. Grading can be tough, but this is college so get over it. She knows a great deal about teaching social studies, and her book is actually really useful. Just work hard and you will do fine.

Shes straight up mean, is an impossible grader and made me hate everything that had to do with her class except for field. Avoid her section if at all possible.

After reading comments about Janet or Jan, it is apparent that others feel the same way I do about her methods of teaching. She was not very caring and whenever you had an idea that did not agree with her opinion she took points away. I learned that the least effective teachers are those who won't send emails on weekends. Waste of money in my opinion. Recommendation is run from this professor.

I think Jan Alleman in an excellent professor. The students complaining about her in the previous posts must be very soft skinned and afraid of people who "tell it like it is." Jan is very blunt and sees no need to tip toe around issues. The students who seem to have the hardest time with her are the overachievers who constantly try to seek love and approval from professors and the underachievers who take issue with doing real work. If you attend class and do the assignments you will have no problem and will learn so much from her. She is very knowledgeable and her methods are unique. I have learned more in her class than I have learned from all of my previous TE courses put together. To not choose her for your TE 401 professor would be a mistake.

I read all of the posts about Jan before taking the class and i was really scared that i was in her section. After the class though, i am so GLAD i had her. She is truly one of MSU's best professors and i learned SOO much from her. I would take her again in a heart beat.

Warning to future teachers!!! If you want to know what NOT to do take this class was Alleman. She is manipulative, she won't let you see your grades ever, she quote "doesn't have time for individual needs" and thats just the beginning. She wrote the book and thinks very highly of herself, so don't disagree with her or you'll fail. I've never had to suck up so much in my entire life, and truly I disagree with how she handles pretty much every situation. She singles people out and embarasses them and is flat out unethical.

She is mean, does not seem to care if anyone understands her ideas or assignments, and her perfume smells awful. I've made a point to stay on her good side and kiss her butt all semester, but deep down I have nothing nice to say about her. She was recently quoted as saying "I know no one likes me in the class, but I just won an award so I won't let it bother me"

Prof. Alleman - i have mixed feelings about her. Some days she's really caring, and genuinely wants her students to learn, and then sometimes i think she could care less. She can be VERY rude and forthcoming, but I do believe that she means well. She is a tough grader becuase usually things are VERY unclear as to what the heck she wants. She has no understandings of how annoying it is to have to give lessons for both this class and another class at the same time, when your ct's sometimes are not compliant. She also has a way of pointing out students which at times can be frustrating. Overall, I do feel however that I have learned a lot of valuable things that you cannot learn anywhere else.

I agree with the above statement to some degree-but I will sayh that I learned an incredible amount from this prof. She gave practical advice and taught meaningful and useful information that you can apply in teaching. Just stay off her bad side and you'll be fine.

Despite the fact that Dr. Alleman is published and knowledgeable on subject of effective teaching strategies, she lacks empathy or compassion for any of her students. She is incapable of relating to their backgrounds and experiences and makes rash judgements about students' lives. On more than one occasion, has verbally singled out and harrassed students in class.
I would advise anyone in the field of teacher education NOT to take her class. She is extremely judgemental and abrasive. For those of you who have taken Dr. Alleman's class and have similar problems, I suggest you report your grievances to the department's Ombudsman. This kind of behavior is deplorable and is unacceptable from our university's educators.
