Top 5 Binge-Worthy Netflix Originals For Summer

By Catherine Muscaro on May 20, 2016

Summer has just started, and shows like One Tree Hill and Grey’s Anatomy have reached the end of their binge-watching limit (probably because we’ve finished the entire series … again). It’s time to turn to the Netflix originals; but what’s the next show Netflix itself has debuted that’s worth watching?

While Orange is the New Black and House of Cards have had their fair share of love from Netflix users everywhere, the online movie and TV hub has only furthered their ability to produce a great original. Though some may seem to fall flat (Hemlock Grove, anyone?), plenty of new comedies and dramas are making their way into Netflix lovers’ hearts.

Here are five binge-worthy titles of Netflix original series that deserve a moment in the spotlight — if only for the summer!

Grace and Frankie. The dynamic duo of Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin brings life into this comedy about two women dumped by their husbands. After the women realize their men are way more into each other than them, down-to-Earth Grace and eccentric Frankie form a bond forged in mutual understanding — and a drink or two!

It’s amazing to watch Fonda and Tomlin still delivering impeccable performances, and a Netflix original is no exception. This look at life through the eyes of someone in their 70s as they attempt to enjoy every moment they have left is sweet, fun, and a good laugh all around.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. For any of you Midwestern folks out there, this series appeals to our sentimental side by portraying the life of Midwesterner Kimmy Schmidt: an average small town girl turned Doomsday cult member turned modern day New Yorker.

Her reintroduction to everyday life from her spunky friend, Titus, is both entertaining and heart-felt. The Big Apple mixed with budding friendships, laugh-out-loud reality checks, and deep drama set the stage for Kimmy as she learns about the last 15 years she spent underground.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is funny, charming, optimistic, and, yes, unbreakable.

Between. After a disease wipes out anyone over the age of 22, these up and coming 20-somethings are suddenly thrown into total and utter self-dependency. Add a government-ordered quarantine and some melodramatic acting, and you’ve got quite a show.

I mean, being a college sophomore who feels a little lost for direction when it comes to the reality of adulthood, this one really resonates with me. Anyone who has spent a minute away at college knows the prospect of being on your own is very, very scary.

Between puts the changes from teenage antics to real adult problems into perspective with engaging characters and a freaky scary plot-line. Definitely recommend.

The Killing. The darker side of Netflix comes out in this thriller about the murder of Rosie Larsen. Set in Seattle, the bleak backdrop contributes to the gloom and tension surrounding the murder, as detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) attempt to close the case.

The show excels in building and maintaining suspense throughout, adding unexpected twists and elusive mystery every time we as viewers think we’ve finally pegged a killer. Though it originally belonged to AMC, Netflix has taken on the drama and continues to bring its best with The Killing – if cold-blooded murder cases are your thing, of course.

Fuller House. The buzz around this nostalgic ’90s spin-off comes as no surprise to anyone! D.J. and Stephanie Tanner are back in their childhood home, except they’re all grown up now. D.J. is a single mom of three, and Stephanie is a “crazy aunt,” going out to parties, wearing tight clothes, and embracing her sexuality more than we’d ever expect from sweet Steph — and we love it!

With Kimmy as a live-in friend, the never-ending fun (and more-than-anticipated chaos) brings us back to the good ole days of ABC. If you haven’t seen this yet, you need to go watch it now. Trust me.
