Tips for When You’re Homesick in College:

Whenever people talk about college, they rarely mention homesickness. It doesn’t happen to everybody, but a surprisingly large amount of people experience this at some point. Whether you’re thousands of miles away from home or just a half hour, homesickness effects a lot of people at some point. Below are some tips to help avoid homesickness (or at least make it bearable):

 Get involved in school:

Whether it’s sports, a club, or a theater production, keeping busy is key! A lot of the time, homesickness really bothers you because you have so much time to think about it! But when you’re being active and making friends college it will feel more like home to you. And when you’re going to be there for two to four years, a place feeling like home is really important.

 2) Try not to go home every weekend

I know this one is hard, I definitely did this my freshman year. But looking back, I really regret it because I missed out on so many opportunities to make friends and go to dances and other social activities. Going home a lot makes you feel good because it satisfies your need to be close to your family, but it also means you’re not getting the same ‘college’ experience. Part of the amazingness of college is learning to be on your own and be independent, and going home constantly is going to hinder that. That being said, you should definitely call/text/ FaceTime your family as needed, because keeping in contact is important. You don’t need to go home all the time to keep in contact.

 3) Balance is key

Balancing is really important when you’re homesick because you have to remember that school comes first! It’s easy to worry about what’s going on at home or how all your friends are doing in their perspective schools. But for the most part, you really don’t need to worry about them. They have their own lives now, and so do you! It’s important to keep in touch with them and make sure they are still a part of your life, but also to grow into the independent person that college can help you become.
